Scheduling a Purchase ExamWhen you call to schedule a purchase exam at AESAH, the receptionist will need to know the name, age, breed, sex and intended use of the horse you are buying as well as the name of the owner and whether or not the horse has been seen at AESAH before for any reason. If the horse has a medical record here at our clinic, we must have permission from the owner[s] to release any and all records on the horse prior to proceeding with scheduling the exam. We require that the buyer and seller be present for the exam. The exam must be scheduled for a location with good footing, both hard and soft, with adequate space to examine the horse in motion at all gaits. In general, we prefer to perform these exams at the hospital. In the winter it is usually necessary to schedule the exam at an indoor arena, as it is not possible to assess soundness on ice and snow. The receptionist will want to know if you would like to have any routine radiographs taken at the time of the exam. If navicular films are requested it is necessary to have a farrier present to remove shoes and reset them if the horse is shod. The receptionist will also want to know if any other special tests are requested. These may include (but are not limited to) routine blood work, screening for drugs, EIA or Coggins test, fecal test, insurance exam, health certificate, ECG, ultrasonography, endoscopy, or fluoroscopy. Questions regarding these tests may be directed to a staff veterinarian if you are uncertain of what you would like included in the exam. The basic physical exam and soundness evaluation will usually take 1-2 hours to perform. Additional tests will take longer. Attached to this page is a form which we require to be read and signed by the purchaser prior to the exam. You may copy this text, print it out, sign it and mail it in to the hospital at PO Box 671512, Chugiak, AK 99567. Or we can mail or fax a copy to you prior to the exam. CERTIFICATE OF VETERINARY EXAMINATION EXCLUSIONS: No radiological, blood or other specialized techniques are included unless specifically requested and recorded. If the buyer wishes to obtain a warranty covering exact height, freedom from vices, the non-administration of drugs prior to examination, or the animal’s breeding, medical or performance history, he should obtain such a warranty from the seller as these matters are not the responsibility of the veterinarian. If our hospital is currently working for the seller then release of any and all medical records on the horse being examined must be obtained prior to the exam. If we have examined and or treated this particular horse in the past then every attempt must be made to secure the permission of all previous owners to release information regarding the horse. RECOMMENDATIONS: The basis of this exam is the physical exam. The physical exam may reveal areas that warrant further investigation by more specialized techniques. A list of specialized techniques follows and we recommend that the buyer notify us prior to the exam if certain areas are of concern, and if any of these are going to be required. The doctor performing the exam can help you decide which exams may be helpful for the intended use of the horse. If the farm where you are purchasing the horse does not have a soft and hard surface for longing and jogging then we suggest you arrange for the horse to be brought to our clinic (in the summer) or to an indoor facility (in the winter) so that a consistent exam can be done. The advantage of bringing the horse to the clinic is that x-rays or fluoroscopy can be done and read on the spot which expedites the process. Blood tests: We recommend blood be drawn for a drug test. If you choose not to process it at the time then it is stored frozen and can be processed at any time in the future. This protects both the buyer and the seller. Processing time may be as long as 2-3 weeks. A blood sample is also taken for a Coggins or EIA test. This is highly recommended since silent carriers exist and a positive can result in you being required to put your purchase to sleep and forfeit your investment. Because the consequences of a positive test is immediate quarantine of the facility and compulsory destruction of the horse we require authorization from the seller to submit the sample. An equine panel is a blood analysis for complete blood count and blood serum chemistries that evaluate certain organ systems. Please note that results may take days to weeks. We suggest that any contracts for purchase be considered pending satisfactory results. Disclosure of results: Comments are made during the exam and results documented. We prefer to have the buyer and seller present so there is little chance for miscommunication and any findings are observed and understood by all. Insurance examination: most insurance companies recognize this exam as valid for approximately 2 weeks but require their form to be filled in. If they require medical history on the horse then this must be provided by the seller and the horse’s regular veterinarian as we are not able to verify any history. I have read and understood the above. I acknowledge that this exam is a “picture in time” with resultant limitations for any predictions or guarantees of future soundness.
